Gel nail hints and tips

  • File and buff nails; trim cuticles then wash hands thoroughly before starting to get rid of debris.
  • If you are doing your own nails, do one hand fully before starting the other.
  • Layers of gel stay tacky until you apply the top coat and clean off the residue.
  • Lighter colours are easier to work with than dark – mistakes don’t show as much.
  • If you’re right handed, do the left hand first or vice versa.
  • DON’T wear a fluffy jumper!
  • Non-acetone nail polish remover doubles as prep and residue remover.
  • Substitute pure acetone for branded soak-off gel removers.
  • You can apply regular polish over soak off polish if you want a quick colour change; use non-acetone remover to take off.
  • Skin soaked in acetone may go white – BUT it disappears as soon as you wash your hands/feet.  Salon products are just as powerful.
  • Do your soaking while watching TV (on a tray on your lap) – the minutes rush by.
  • Keep your polishes out of direct sunlight as the gel can harden even in an opaque bottle.
